The National Examinations Council (NECO) has officially announced the release of the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results. Alongside the result announcement, NECO has also confirmed the dates for resit exams in English Studies and Mathematics.
The details were shared in a press statement signed by Azeez Sani, Acting Director of Public Affairs at NECO headquarters, Minna.
Over 179,000 Candidates Sat for the 2025 BECE
According to the statement, a total of 179,201 students across Nigeria registered to take part in the BECE. The nationwide exam, which serves as a graduation benchmark for Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3) students, was conducted in 12 key subjects.
The examination began on 12th May 2025 and concluded on 23rd May 2025, with thousands of secondary schools participating under the supervision of NECO and relevant education authorities.
BECE Resit Scheduled for July 2025
In a significant update, NECO also announced the dates for the BECE resit exams, specifically for students who failed or missed English and Mathematics — both essential for promotion to Senior Secondary School (SS1).

Significance of BECE in Nigeria’s Education System
The Basic Education Certificate Examination is a mandatory assessment for students completing junior secondary school in Nigeria. The exam determines promotion into Senior Secondary School and ensures students meet academic requirements in core subjects.
Why English and Mathematics Matter
Both English and Mathematics are foundational subjects, and failure to pass them can hinder students’ academic progression. NECO’s decision to offer resits underscores the importance of educational inclusivity and second chances.
What Parents and Schools Should Do Next
With results now released and resit dates confirmed, parents and schools are advised to:
- Check results promptly via the NECO portal
- Enroll students for the resit exams (if applicable)
- Provide extra coaching in English and Mathematics for those resitting
- Ensure students are mentally prepared and equipped for the resit dates in July
Schools may also consider organizing revision bootcamps or after-school tutoring sessions to help students succeed.
NECO Reaffirms Commitment to Academic Excellence
NECO has once again demonstrated its dedication to maintaining the integrity of national assessments. From conducting exams to releasing results in a timely manner, the council continues to uphold educational standards.
“We are committed to delivering credible and accessible examinations to support student growth and national development,” said Azeez Sani.
The council also reaffirmed its stand against malpractice, stating that examination centers involved in misconduct will face disciplinary actions.
