The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) branch, has declared an indefinite strike over alleged failure by authorities to implement the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and the union
The industrial action began on Monday, August 10, 2026, following what the union described as prolonged delays in resolving both federal and local issues affecting academic staff at the university
The development is expected to affect lectures, academic supervision and research activities at the institution as ASUU maintains that its members will not resume services until the outstanding issues are addressed
ASUU Begins Indefinite Strike at NSUK
The NSUK branch chairman, Zubairu Loko, announced the strike during a press conference in Keffi
According to him, the union decided to withdraw its services after exhausting available channels of dialogue with relevant authorities without achieving satisfactory results
Loko said the branch had also received approval from ASUU’s national leadership before commencing the industrial action
He explained that the union did not intend to embark on a strike but was pushed into taking the decision following the alleged failure to implement agreements already reached
“We did not choose strike The failure to implement agreements has left us with no reasonable alternative
The union said it remains open to genuine negotiations but stressed that discussions must result in concrete implementation of agreed decisions
Why ASUU NSUK Declared the Strike
The union’s grievances are linked to two major areas: the alleged non implementation of the 2025 Federal Government ASUU agreement and unresolved financial issues specific to Nasarawa State University
Outstanding Payments Reportedly Exceed N3 Billion
The NSUK branch has previously raised concerns over outstanding payments reportedly exceeding N3 billion
The arrears reportedly include Earned Academic Allowance, consequential adjustments linked to the implementation of the national minimum wage and the salary increase approved for university lecturers
According to the branch, it has held discussions with the university management, governing council and Nasarawa State Government in an attempt to resolve the matters
However, the union said the engagements have not produced the desired outcome
Loko therefore declared that academic staff had withdrawn their services until the outstanding financial obligations were addressed
The action is expected to affect teaching, academic supervision and research activities at the university
ASUU Authorizes More University Branches to Prepare for Strike
The NSUK strike comes amid renewed tension between ASUU and the Federal Government over the implementation of the 2025 agreement
ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC), at its meeting held at the University of Abuja on August 8 and 9, reportedly authorized 20 university branches to begin procedures toward industrial action
The affected branches were directed to issue 14 day ultimatums before proceeding with strikes if their demands were not met
ASUU President, Chris Piwuna, said the decision followed requests from branches seeking permission to take industrial action over unresolved demands
The development indicates that the dispute could extend beyond Nasarawa State University if the affected issues are not resolved
Universities Affected by ASUU’s Latest Directive
Among the institutions whose ASUU branches were authorized to begin processes toward industrial action are:
- Nasarawa State University, Keffi
- Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai
- Gombe State University
- Plateau State University
- Adekunle Ajasin University
- Abia State University
- Imo State University
- Niger Delta University
- Taraba State University
- University of Africa, Toru-Orua
- Bayelsa Medical University
- Ambrose Alli University
- Kaduna State University
- Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology
- Northwest University, Kano
However, the NSUK and Imo State University chapters have already commenced indefinite strikes
What the Strike Means for NSUK Students
The industrial action could disrupt several academic activities at Nasarawa State University
With lecturers withdrawing their services, students may experience interruptions to lectures, academic supervision, research activities and other academic engagements
The timing could also raise concerns among students whose examinations, project supervision or other academic requirements are scheduled around the period of the strike
ASUU, however, said it regretted the inconvenience the action could cause students and their parents
The union appealed to the Federal Government, Nasarawa State Government, the university governing council and management to intervene and resolve the issues
ASUU Calls for Government Intervention
The NSUK branch maintained that it had exercised restraint and pursued dialogue in the interest of students, the university and society
The union argued that agreements reached with government must be respected and implemented to prevent recurring industrial disputes in Nigeria’s public university system
It also maintained that the responsibility for restoring normal academic activities lies with the authorities responsible for resolving the issues that triggered the strike

ASUU’s national leadership is expected to review developments at an emergency meeting scheduled for late August or early September 2026
The outcome of that meeting could determine whether the dispute escalates, remains limited to individual university branches or moves toward broader negotiations with government
For NSUK students, the immediate priority remains the resolution of the issues between the union and the relevant authorities so that academic activities can resume
