On Thursday, December 28, 2023, the new multipurpose Smart ID card for staff and students at Lagos State University (LASU) was unveiled by Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, the Vice-Chancellor of LASU.
The single-purpose ID cards that employees and students now use are intended to be replaced with the smart ID card.Shortly before the Senate meeting on Thursday began, The card was introduced to the university community by the Vice Chancellor and other members of the management team, who also demonstrated how it could be used as an attendance control system for big classes of students.
The VC, DVC, Administration, Prof. Adenike Boyo, DVC Academics, Prof. Folusho Omobitan, and Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel FANU, used the attendance management device that was previously established in the Senate Secretariat to make the demonstration easier.
The Senate expressed gratitude to the VC for realizing the Smart Card concept and congratulated ICT on the advancement. The ID card must be tapped on the installed device in order for the user to utilize it.
The gadget will log the holders’ attendance and display their name and other details. Following a successful test, the Vice Chancellor stated that batches of Smart ID cards will be produced and given to users.
The first group of users consists of administrators, newly admitted 100-level students, deputy registrars, and university Senate members. Prof. Toyin Enikuomehin, Director of ICT, announced during the multipurpose card’s Senate Chamber premiere that the new ID card will be used to identify staff members and pupils as well as track attendance in huge classrooms..
In addition, the card, he claimed, can be used as an ATM card tied to a bank account and powered by Interswitch.
In order to enable the card’s activation and eventual release, he consequently requested faculty, staff, and students to furnish their National Identity Number (NIN).Mid-January 2024 is anticipated to see the introduction of the first batch of the new Smart ID cards.
