The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA) chapter, has declared that payment of outstanding salaries alone will not stop another industrial action unless the Ondo State Government fully implements the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU agreement
Although reports indicate that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has approved funds to clear salary arrears, the union insists it will only suspend its ongoing strike after lecturers receive payment alerts Beyond unpaid salaries, ASUU says another strike is already in the pipeline over unresolved welfare and agreement implementation issues
The development raises fresh concerns for students across Ondo State owned universities, as the planned industrial action could extend beyond AAUA to include the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH) and the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED)
ASUU Says Salary Payment Will Not End Strike Threat
The AAUA chapter of ASUU revealed that it has concluded all internal processes required for another round of industrial action and is currently awaiting approval from its national leadership
According to the union, clearing outstanding salaries will only address one aspect of the dispute The larger concern remains the Ondo State Government’s failure to implement the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU agreement, which lecturers say has already been adopted by federal universities and several state owned institutions
Union Insists on Receiving Salary Alerts Before Suspending Strike
Speaking on Monday, AAUA ASUU Chairman, Dr. Boluwaji Oshodi, said the union had received reports that funds had been released to settle salary arrears
However, he stressed that ASUU would only believe the government’s claim after lecturers receive payment notifications
“Government has not spoken to us directly We have heard that funds have been released, but as a union, we don’t work with promises We work with action Until we receive salary alerts, we will not believe the money has been released”
The union disclosed that lecturers are currently owed salaries for May, June and July, a situation that prompted the indefinite strike which began on July 10
Fresh Industrial Action May Affect Three Ondo Universities
ASUU warned that another strike could begin at any time if the 2025 FG/ASUU agreement remains unimplemented
According to the union, the proposed action will not be limited to AAUA alone but may simultaneously involve:
Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA)
- The institution has remained under an indefinite strike over unpaid salaries and unresolved welfare issues
Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH)
- The university may join the planned industrial action if the state government fails to meet ASUU’s demands
University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED)
- UNIMED lecturers are also expected to participate in the coordinated strike should negotiations fail
- Dr. Oshodi described the proposed action as more extensive than the current strike because it would involve all three Ondo State owned universities at the same time
ASUU Demands Full Implementation of 2025 FG/ASUU Agreement
The union argued that the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU agreement took effect in January 2026 and has already been implemented in federal universities as well as several state owned institutions
ASUU believes lecturers in Ondo State should enjoy the same conditions of service and welfare, warning that continued delay places them at a disadvantage compared to their colleagues nationwide
AAUA Management Appeals for Calm
Meanwhile, the management of Adekunle Ajasin University confirmed that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has approved a special intervention fund to help the institution meet its financial obligations
The university appealed to students to remain calm while payment processes are being finalized, expressing optimism that the salary issue would soon be resolved
However, uncertainty remains over whether the intervention will prevent another industrial action, as ASUU continues to insist that implementation of the 2025 agreement is non negotiable
