The 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings have brought encouraging news for Nigeria’s higher education sector, with the Federal Government celebrating the impressive performance of 24 Nigerian universities on the global stage The achievement marks the country’s strongest showing since it began participating in the prestigious rankings
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, described the milestone as clear evidence that ongoing reforms under the Federal Government’s education agenda are beginning to produce measurable results He noted that Nigeria is now the most represented nation in Sub Saharan Africa in this year’s rankings
The latest recognition also highlights the growing global competitiveness of Nigerian universities, with increased investment in research, innovation, digital transformation, infrastructure and quality assurance contributing to improved international visibility
FG Applauds Nigerian Universities for Historic Performance
The Minister of Education praised the country’s universities for securing a record breaking presence in the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings
According to him, 24 Nigerian universities earned spots in this year’s rankings, surpassing the previous record of 21 institutions and making Nigeria the leading country in Sub Saharan Africa by representation
Alausa specifically congratulated the University of Ibadan (UI), University of Lagos (UNILAG), Bayero University Kano, and every institution that made the prestigious global list
He stressed that the achievement reflects years of deliberate investment in strengthening Nigeria’s higher education system
Education Reforms Begin Delivering Results
The minister explained that the latest rankings demonstrate the positive impact of the Federal Government’s ongoing education reforms
According to him, improvements in:
- Research funding
- Innovation
- Digital transformation
- Infrastructure
- Academic quality assurance
- Institutional governance

He added that 17 of the ranked institutions are federal universities, showing significant progress in public higher education
More Nigerian Universities Join Global Assessment
Beyond the institutions that made the final rankings, the minister revealed that 27 additional Nigerian universities participated in this year’s assessment process
Their participation, he said, reflects a growing commitment to transparency, international benchmarking and continuous institutional improvement
This wider participation is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s future performance in global university rankings
Federal Government Reaffirms Commitment to NESRI
Alausa reiterated that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to implementing the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI)
He explained that the initiative is focused on building universities capable of producing world class research, innovation and highly skilled graduates who can drive Nigeria’s economic development
According to the minister, the government will continue investing in policies that improve teaching quality, research output and global competitiveness
