FUTA MBChB Programs Gets MDCN Approval

The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has recorded a major milestone in medical education in Nigeria as its Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) program receives full accreditation from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) This approval marks a significant step forward for the university’s College of Health Sciences and strengthens its position in training future medical professionals

The MDCN accreditation team, led by Deputy Registrar Dr. Nnameka Nwakanma, visited FUTA on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, where they confirmed the university’s compliance with required standards As part of the approval, MDCN also granted FUTA a quota of 100 medical students, allowing the institution to expand its intake capacity for future doctors

The MDCN team expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness demonstrated by FUTA during the accreditation exercise Dr. Nwakanma noted that the engagement with the university management was productive and aligned with regulatory expectations for medical education in Nigeria

He further emphasized MDCN’s commitment to ensuring that all medical training institutions meet global best practices, while supporting universities through the accreditation process

Comprehensive Inspection of Health Sciences Facilities

As part of the evaluation, the MDCN delegation carried out an extensive inspection of facilities across the College of Health Sciences The assessment covered key academic departments including:

  • Human Anatomy
  • Physiology
  • Medical Microbiology
  • Community Medicine
  • Pharmacology and Therapeutics
  • Pathology related units

Clinical and Laboratory Assessments

The team also examined critical training facilities such as:

  • Physiology Laboratory and Animal House
  • Histology and Histopathology Laboratory
  • Medical Museum
  • Rural Health Practice Centre at Comprehensive Health Centre, Ijare

These facilities were assessed based on equipment quality, space adequacy, and instructional materials needed for effective medical training

Visit to FUTA Teaching Hospital

The MDCN delegation also visited the FUTA Teaching Hospital, where they were received by the Chief Medical Director, Professor Olusegun Ojo The visit formed part of the clinical evaluation required for accreditation approval

Professor Ojo described the accreditation as a landmark achievement, noting that it officially paves the way for FUTA medical students to begin professional examinations

He stated that the development marks a turning point for the institution, adding that preparations for examinations would commence immediately

FUTA Leadership Reacts to Accreditation Success

The Acting Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Victor Ukwenya, presented a detailed overview of the college structure during the visit He highlighted the integration of preclinical and clinical training systems designed to meet MDCN standards

He explained that the college structure was intentionally developed to support efficient medical education and ensure the production of highly skilled health professionals

Vice Chancellor Celebrates Milestone Achievement

FUTA Vice Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, expressed gratitude to the MDCN delegation for the successful accreditation process She reaffirmed the university’s commitment to maintaining excellence in medical training and complying fully with regulatory standards

She also appreciated the support of the Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, and community stakeholders for contributing to the development of the MBChB program through donations of modern teaching laboratories and student accommodation

According to her, the support from Akure indigenes will have long lasting benefits for future generations of medical students
