Nigeria Sets New Record as 24 Universities Earn 2026 Global Rankings

Nigeria has achieved a major milestone in global higher education as 24 universities secured places in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings The achievement marks the country’s strongest performance ever and positions Nigeria as the most represented nation in Sub Saharan Africa in this year’s rankings

The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, who described the development as proof that ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s education sector are beginning to deliver measurable results The increase from 21 to 24 ranked institutions highlights growing international recognition of Nigerian universities

The latest rankings also reflect increased investment in research, innovation, digital transformation, infrastructure, and quality assurance, all aimed at improving the country’s higher education system

Nigeria Achieves Historic Performance in 2026 Global Rankings

Nigeria’s representation in the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings has risen to 24 universities, making it the country’s best performance since participating in the prestigious global assessment

According to the Minister of Education, the increase demonstrates that sustained reforms are strengthening the quality and competitiveness of Nigerian higher education institutions on the global stage

The achievement also makes Nigeria the leading country in Sub Saharan Africa in terms of the number of universities featured in the rankings

Federal Universities Dominate the Rankings

Out of the 24 Nigerian institutions recognised globally, 17 are federal universities, reflecting the government’s ongoing efforts to improve public tertiary education

Among the universities celebrated are:

  • University of Ibadan
  • University of Lagos
  • Bayero University Kano
  • Several other federal and state universities across Nigeria

FG Reaffirms Commitment to Higher Education

The Federal Government says it will continue implementing reforms through the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI)
