SSANU, NASU Suspend Strike Again

The planned nationwide strike by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has been temporarily suspended once again, bringing relief to many students and university workers across Nigeria

The unions confirmed that the indefinite strike earlier scheduled to begin on May 11 would not proceed for now following fresh assurances from the Federal Government over ongoing renegotiation talks However, the unions warned that the suspension remains conditional and could be reversed if the government fails to meet agreed timelines

Speaking on the development, SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim revealed that both unions had given the Federal Government a fresh two week deadline to conclude negotiations and sign all pending agreements related to workers’ welfare and salary issues

SSANU and NASU Suspend Indefinite Strike

The Joint Action Committee of SSANU and NASU had earlier directed members nationwide to begin an indefinite strike action over unresolved labour disputes with the Federal Government

The strike threat sparked concerns among students, parents, and university communities already dealing with disruptions in the education sector

However, after appeals and interventions from the Federal Government Expanded Tertiary Institutions Renegotiation Committee, the unions agreed to temporarily suspend the planned industrial action

According to Mohammed Ibrahim, the government assured the unions that negotiations would be concluded within two weeks

Unions Give Federal Government Fresh Deadline

The unions made it clear that the suspension is not permanent but based on “firm commitments” from the government

Mohammed Ibrahim explained that SSANU and NASU expect all negotiations to be completed and agreements officially signed within the agreed timeline

Warning of Possible Fresh Strike

The unions warned that failure by the Federal Government to honour the agreement could lead to another nationwide strike

According to Ibrahim, union leaders will closely monitor the negotiation process throughout the two week period

He stressed that all unresolved issues must be addressed immediately to avoid another industrial crisis in Nigerian universities

Key Demands of SSANU and NASU

Among the major demands by the unions are:

  • Completion of the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement
  • Review of salary structures for university workers
  • Full implementation of collective bargaining agreements
  • Payment of outstanding allowances and salary arrears
  • Improved welfare conditions for non academic staff

The unions also rejected reported unilateral salary increment proposals, including the alleged 30 percent salary increase offer, insisting that proper negotiations must be followed

What This Means for Nigerian Universities

The temporary suspension of the strike may provide short term relief for students and academic activities across public universities

Many stakeholders in the education sector are hopeful that both parties will reach a final agreement before the expiration of the two week window

However, uncertainty still remains as university workers continue to demand long overdue reforms and improved welfare packages

If negotiations fail, Nigerian universities could once again face disruptions that may affect academic calendars nationwide
