The United States hosts pre-departure orientations for 700 Nigerian students

The United States Embassy in Abuja and the United States Consulate General in Lagos have sponsored pre-departure orientations for roughly 700 students who are receiving Education USA advising services from the United States Mission in Nigeria in 2023.

These Nigerian students, including 73 Opportunity Funds grantees, would shortly depart for studies in the United States.

According to the US Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria, Nigeria is the tenth greatest provider of foreign students to the US.

Last year, nearly 14,000 Nigerian students were enrolled at over 1,000 US higher education institutions, according to the Mission.

According to the United States Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria, “EducationUSA is a U.S. Department of State-supported network of over 430 international student advising centers worldwide that offer information and guidance on the United States’ higher education admissions process.”

“The Opportunity Scholarship  Program of EducationUSA aids highly qualified students who are expected to be awarded full financial aid from US schools and universities but lack the financial means to fund their pre-US arrival charges such as application fees, test fees, and foreign travel.”

The students were praised and wished luck by Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Rolf Olson, Counselor for Public Affairs Adnan Siddiqi, and Lagos Public Affairs Officer Joseph Kruzich.

Olson voiced his expectation in Abuja that the students would improve Nigerian infrastructure and society.

Kruzich advised Lagos students to “take full advantage of all the opportunities that American universities have to offer and become actively involved in numerous organizations and clubs that will enhance your experience as a foreign student.”
