Babcock University has honored Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu with its prestigious Leadership and Service Award during the institution’s 24th Undergraduate Convocation Ceremony held in Ilishan Remo, Ogun State The award recognized the governor’s contributions to governance, public service, and leadership in Lagos State
The colorful ceremony attracted over 3,400 graduating students, university officials, parents, and distinguished guests from across Nigeria. Beyond the award presentation, the event featured inspiring speeches, recognition of academic excellence, and encouragement for graduates to embrace innovation, integrity, and service
One of the biggest highlights of the ceremony was the presentation of a ₦10 million cash prize to the overall best graduating student, making the celebration even more memorable
Babcock University Recognizes Sanwo Olu’s Leadership
Babcock University presented Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu with the Leadership and Service Award in appreciation of what it described as his exceptional commitment to governance and public service
The recognition came during the university’s 24th Undergraduate Convocation Ceremony, where thousands of students officially received their degrees after successfully completing their academic programs
University management praised the governor for demonstrating leadership through impactful policies and developmental projects that have transformed different sectors in Lagos State
Sanwo Olu Urges Graduates to Lead with Integrity
Delivering the convocation lecture titled “Breaking New Ground: Faith, Grit and the Work of New Beginnings,” Governor Sanwo Olu encouraged members of the 2026 Undergraduate NOVA Class to become solution providers rather than spectators
He advised the graduates to remain innovative, resilient, and committed to lifelong learning while using evidence based ideas to contribute meaningfully to national development
According to the governor, leadership goes beyond occupying positions of authority and should always be driven by accountability, integrity, and service to humanity
Leadership Is Tested During Difficult Times
Reflecting on his years in office, Sanwo Olu described the COVID 19 pandemic and the EndSARS protests as defining moments that tested leadership
He stressed that genuine leaders are measured by how they respond during periods of uncertainty and crisis rather than during comfortable times
The governor also reminded graduates that success requires determination and continuous personal growth
“The world will not give you what you believe you deserve; it will only give you what you demand of it,” he told the graduating students
Lagos Records Major Development Under Sanwo Olu
Governor Sanwo Olu highlighted several achievements recorded by his administration over the past seven years
According to him, Lagos State’s annual budget increased from less than ₦900 billion in 2019 to ₦4.44 trillion in 2026, reflecting significant economic growth
He also pointed to investments in transportation, healthcare, education, housing, and technology
Among the projects highlighted were:
- Establishment of two new state universities
- Construction of the largest children’s hospital in Sub Saharan Africa
- Expansion of digital learning across public schools
- Delivery of thousands of affordable housing units
- Continued investment in Lagos’ growing technology ecosystem
The governor also noted that Lagos was recognized by the Deal room Global Tech Ecosystem Index in 2025 as the world’s fastest growing tech ecosystem
Best Graduating Student Receives ₦10 Million Award
The convocation ceremony also celebrated academic excellence
Oluwapelumi Amosu emerged as the Overall Best Full Time Graduating Student and received a ₦10 million cash prize in recognition of outstanding academic performance
Speaking after receiving the award, Amosu credited the achievement to consistency, discipline, and hard work throughout the academic journey
Graduating Students Encouraged to Give Back
Speaking on behalf of the graduating class, Simisola Abore described the university experience as both challenging and rewarding
She encouraged fellow graduates to uphold Babcock University’s values and remain committed to making positive contributions to society wherever they find themselves
Her message focused on responsibility, service, and community impact as graduates begin a new chapter of their lives
