The highly anticipated initiative, powered by fintech giant OPay and tech leader Google, is designed to empower students with advanced digital skills, mentorship, funding, and direct career opportunities in the technology sector

OPay & Google Innovation Challenge 2026 Targets Young Nigerian Innovators
Organizers say the program is focused on helping students bridge the gap between classroom learning and real world innovation by exposing them to practical corporate mentorship, advanced AI tools, and startup development opportunities
Unlike many tech competitions limited to computer science students, this challenge welcomes applicants from all academic disciplines, provided they possess creativity, problem solving abilities, and basic AI assisted design knowledge

Eligibility Requirements for Applicants
Interested applicants must meet specific academic and technical conditions before applying for the program
To qualify, candidates must:
Be undergraduate students in a Nigerian university, polytechnic, or college of education
- Have basic AI assisted design skills using Canva Gemini workflow
- Maintain a minimum CGPA of 3.5/5.0 for universities
- Maintain at least 2.8/4.0 for polytechnics and colleges of education
The organizers added that students facing genuine financial hardship may receive special consideration during the selection process
Full Timeline for the OPay & Google Challenge 2026
The competition will run in several phases throughout 2026
Application and Screening Phase
Between May and June 2026, over 100,000 applications are expected nationwide, with only 48 teams shortlisted
Skill Acquisition Training
From June to August 2026, shortlisted students will participate in a six week virtual learning program followed by assessments
Innovation Bootcamp
Top performing teams will move into a six week intensive innovation bootcamp led by OPay Digital experts
Grand Finale Event
Finalists will pitch their projects live before investors and tech executives at the Empowering Futures Conference 2.0 scheduled for November 6, 2026
How Nigerian Students Can Apply
Students interested in participating are encouraged to form teams, improve their AI design capabilities, and submit their applications early before the deadline
