Reps Hold Student Loan Sensitisation in Akure

The House of Representatives Committee on Student Loans, Scholarships and Higher Education Financing has announced plans to hold a major sensitisation engagement in the South West region to boost awareness about Nigeria’s Student Loan Scheme

The engagement, scheduled to take place at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State, is expected to bring together students, tertiary institution leaders, policymakers, and education stakeholders to discuss the implementation and accessibility of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND)

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Government and the National Assembly to ensure that more Nigerian students can access affordable tertiary education without financial barriers

Reps Committee to Host Student Loan Engagement in Akure

The South West Zonal Sensitisation Engagement is billed for Thursday, May 21, 2026, at the T.I. Francis Auditorium, FUTA, Akure

Speaking with journalists in Akure, the consultant to the program, Dr. Ayodeji Ologun, explained that the event is designed to deepen public understanding of the Student Loan Scheme and other higher education financing initiatives introduced by the Federal Government

According to him, the engagement will provide stakeholders with the opportunity to discuss the implementation, accessibility, and impact of NELFUND across tertiary institutions in Nigeria

FUTA Vice Chancellor, Lawmakers, NELFUND Officials to Attend

The Vice Chancellor of FUTA, Professor Adenike Temidayo Oladiji, is expected to serve as the Chief Host of the program

Also expected at the event is Hon. Ifeoluwa Ehindero, Chairman of the House Committee on Student Loans, Scholarships and Higher Education Financing and member representing Akoko North East/Akoko North West Federal Constituency

The lawmaker will lead other committee members alongside officials of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) from Abuja

Dr. Ologun noted that the sensitisation program aligns with the oversight responsibilities of the House Committee in monitoring nationwide awareness and compliance with the student loan initiative

Stakeholders to Discuss Challenges and Recommendations

The programme will also create an interactive platform where institutions and stakeholders can share experiences, identify challenges, and recommend improvements to strengthen the student loan scheme

Education administrators, students, and policymakers are expected to deliberate on ways to make tertiary education more inclusive and financially accessible for Nigerian youths

Dr. Ologun stressed that the initiative demonstrates the commitment of the National Assembly to ensuring that no qualified Nigerian student is denied access to higher education because of financial difficulties

Call for Active Participation

Dr. Ologun called on students, institutional representatives, education stakeholders, and members of the public to actively participate in the sensitisation program

He added that collaborative engagement remains important in improving education financing policies and expanding opportunities for Nigerian students seeking higher education
