FG Refutes Claims of Hiking School Fees, Reiterates Commitment to Tuition-Free Federal Universities

President Bola Tinubu has given his consent for the distribution of buses to the student bodies of all colleges, universities, polytechnics, and institutes of education across the country.

According to Schoolslover, Dele Alake, the presidential spokesman, announced this on Monday.

The president claimed that the action is intended to lessen the impact of the loss of fuel subsidies on students enrolled in higher education institutions.

In order to minimize the difficulties faced by parents and students, President Tinubu also instructed the administrators of all Federal Institutions of Higher Learning to avoid arbitrary increases in other fees that must be paid and, whenever possible, postpone further increases.

Furthermore, President Tinubu has given the go-ahead to remove all limitations on the student loan so that it is available to any student or household that requests it.

The Federal Government also praised Nigerian students’ bravery, insight, and cooperation as they helped their country through this trying time, according to the statement.

Meanwhile Unilorin deploys buses to aid student, staff transport amidst fuel hike

As part of its efforts to mitigate the effects of the removal of the gasoline subsidy, the administration of the University of Ilorin in Kwara State has deployed three opulent buses to transport students and staff to and from the campus during times of high demand.

Additionally, it provides both students and lecturers with free data during lectures.

Alhaji Kunle Akogun, director of corporate affairs for the organization, revealed this in a statement he issued yesterday.

It was noted that the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, revealed the palliative measure last Tuesday, at the conclusion of the Senate’s 296th Meeting. This step was in addition to preceding ones.

The three buses would be parked at the university bus terminus at Tipper Garage, Tanke, between 6 and 7:30am, At 7:15 a.m., they would depart for the campus, the report stated.

“Similar to this, the buses would leave the Fountain Roundabout, close to the Senate Building, at 3:00 and 4.00 p.m. for the return trip after work or classes.

According to the institution, the deployment was made to mitigate the negative effects of the high cost of transportation brought on by the removal of fuel subsidies.

Egbewole was also reported to have expressed management’s deep concern over the negative impact of the exorbitant transportation cost on students.

Egbewole noted that the university administration decided to add a second bus to the route and make all three buses free for students, faculty, and staff because they were aware that the cost of transportation was becoming more prohibitive.

Additionally, the Vice Chancellor disclosed that the university administration had stepped up discussions with the state government and independent commuter bus companies about how they could help the university to ease the transportation challenges faced by staff and students.

The private commuter bus companies operating on the university route had promised not to charge excessive fares, despite the fact that the negotiation with the state government had led to three buses made available for the university route.

 Egbewole also disclosed that the administration of the university would offer free data to all academic staff in order to facilitate the smooth execution of the virtual lectures initiative already in place.

Initiated to lessen the amount of time lecturers and their students would need to be physically present in class, the virtual lecture initiative.
